Creating Trust Before Breaking Ground
Inclusive. Participatory. Impact-Driven.
Our facilitation approach is informed by Local Economic Development principles, ensuring that participation leads to tangible economic and social benefits rather than procedural compliance.
At Chibase Consulting, our approach to community facilitation is grounded in respect, participation, and empowerment. We believe that sustainable development begins with listening—deeply and intentionally. Development without dialogue is disruptive, which is why our Social Facilitation Approach is designed to ensure that every project begins with people: their voices, needs, and lived realities. Our work is guided by globally recognised strategies that ensure communities are not merely informed but actively involved in shaping the outcomes that affect their lives.
We view social facilitation not as an event, but as a continuous process of building trust, managing expectations, and aligning development goals with community values. At Chibase, we do not speak for the people—we enable their voices to lead, influence, and shape their own future.

Key Strategies We Use

Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR)
We apply CBPR to co-design solutions with the community, not for them. Through collaborative workshops, community surveys, and mapping sessions, we uncover local knowledge and integrate it into the planning process.
Example: In a housing initiative, we engaged community representatives to co-develop criteria for beneficiary selection, ensuring transparency and ownership from the outset.

Asset-Based Participatory Learning (APL)
Rather than focusing on needs or deficiencies, APL helps communities identify and mobilise their existing strengths—be it social networks, local leadership, or informal skills.
Example: In a local EPWP rollout, we facilitated asset mapping sessions where youth identified their entrepreneurial skills, which informed the design of job readiness training.

Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA)
PRA equips local people with tools to analyse their own realities and take informed action. Techniques include resource mapping, seasonal calendars, and ranking exercises that give a visual, shared understanding of local priorities.
Example: In a rural housing project, we facilitated a PRA workshop where villagers mapped their land use and water sources. This guided the strategic placement of housing units and service infrastructure.

Participatory Learning and Action (PLA)
PLA builds on PRA but places greater emphasis on learning through doing. It fosters continuous reflection and adaptation, making it ideal for dynamic project environments.
Example: In a sanitation and hygiene initiative, community health champions led interactive sessions using role-play and demonstrations, encouraging behavioural change through shared learning.

Empathy Mapping and Conflict Sensitivity
By understanding the fears, frustrations, hopes, and motivations of various stakeholders, we create space for meaningful dialogue and pre-empt possible tensions.
Example: In a mixed-use development, we mapped emotional triggers of tenant groups to navigate resistance and find common ground through facilitated dialogues.

Persuasive Communication
We use tailored, culturally sensitive communication strategies to build trust and consensus. This involves clear messaging in the community’s language, storytelling, visual aids, and one-on-one engagements.
Example: During a sanitation upgrade project, we used visual posters and community dramas to communicate the health benefits—resulting in faster buy-in and reduced resistance.
🏘️ Infrastructure vs. Housing Projects
We tailor our approach depending on the project type:
Why Social Facilitation Matters
1
Reduces project delays caused by social unrest
2
Builds community buy-in and shared ownership
3
Promotes transparency and long-term impact
4
Ensures compliance with stakeholder and funder expectations
