This means establishing Grievance Redress Mechanisms (GRM) that give communities a formal channel for ongoing input, using Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) frameworks to ensure that local knowledge is treated as a legitimate evidence base, and monitoring participation quality — not just participation occurrence — throughout the project lifecycle. A community that attends a meeting has not necessarily been heard. We design processes to close that gap.

Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) refers to the knowledge, practices, values, and ways of understanding that communities have developed over generations in relation to their environment, social organisation, and development. In South African development practice, IKS is frequently acknowledged in policy but rarely integrated into actual project design or community engagement.

At Chibase Consulting, IKS is not a cultural courtesy — it is a methodological pillar. We treat community-held knowledge as a legitimate source of insight that improves the quality of participation design, increases social legitimacy, and reduces the risk of conflict rooted in cultural misrecognition.
